Don’t be scared! It’s OK to run on Halloween

October 28th, 2009, 12:00 pm by Mike Gossie

Looking for an event to scare up some sweat this Halloween? There are plenty of  5K goodies in the East Valley’s fitness fun bag this weekend. And just think, if you’re 175-pound person running a 5K at a 10-minute-per-mile pace, you’ll burn enough calories to eat a package and a half of M&M (assuming it’s a 1.69-ounce package) or a Snickers bar and still have about 100 calories to spare.

If you want to burn off a few calories so you can indulge yourself at your Labor Day picnic, there are a couple 5K races you can jump into Saturday to burn off the burgers before you even eat them.

The Chances for Children Maricopa 5K & Kids Fun Run is Saturday, Sept. 5 at Pacana Park in Maricopa. The 5K starts at 7 a.m. and the fun run follows at 8 a.m.
Both courses stay within the perimeter of Pacana Park. Race day registration must be in by no later than 6:15 a.m. T-shirts are included with the $20 5K entry fee.

If you want to hit the golf course but don’t have any clubs, the Scottsdale Running Company’s XC Festival 5K is for you. The two-loop, 5,000 meter course will be run on grass and some hard-packed dirt across Silverado Golf course Saturday, Sept. 5 at 6 a.m. After the race, stick around to watch some of the best high school runners from around the state as they begin the 2009 season in one of Arizona’s premier cross country meets.
