If you want to try yoga but don’t want to pay yoga studio prices until you find out if you like it, there’s a free yoga class Sunday that will help you stretch your athleticism.
The Phoenix Yoga Meetup Group is offering Yoga in the Park Sunday, Oct. 25 at 9:30 a.m. The free class takes place at Chaparral Park & Community Center, 5401 N. Hayden Rd., Scottsdale. The class will last about an hour. It’s probably a good idea to bring a yoga mat or a blanket.

Next weekend is going to be HUGE for runners, walkers, bikers, hikers, swimmers and triathletes throughout the Valley, with an amazing array of events that will help you get your sweat on. Here are five to choose from if you want to get in on the action:
• The Chandler Challenge: Saturday, October 17, 8 a.m. at Tumbleweed Park. Consists of a 5K fun run-walk and a 10K run. The 5K course leaves Tumbleweed Park, crossing McQueen Road, and heads south on the Paseo Trail with the turnaround at Queen Creek Road. The 10K course leaves Tumbleweed Park, crossing McQueen Road, and heads north on the Paseo Trail to the turnaround at Chandler Boulevard. • 18th Annual Frank Kush 5K and Family & Dog Run: Saturday, October 17, 8:35 a.m. at Tempe Town Lake. Great event for families and athletes of all ages, shapes, sizes and species. • JCC Scottsdale Fall Festival Adult & Youth & Relay Sprint Triathlon & Duathlon: Sunday, October 18, 7 a.m. at the Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center, Scottsdale. The adult triathlon consists of a 250-yard swim, 9.5-mile bike and a 2-mile run. The youth triathlon consists of a 100-yard swim, 3.1-mile bike and a half-mile run. • Arizona State Fair 5K Run/Walk: Sunday, October 18, 8 a.m. at the Arizona State Fairgrounds, 1826 W. McDowell Rd., Phoenix. The cool thing about this race in that participants get a T-shirt and four free tickets to the Arizona State Fair and are also entered into drawings for ride tickets and VIP concert tickets. • Ride and Stride Series Race #2: Sunday, October 18, 8 a.m. at Market Street Park at DC Ranch, 20715 N. Pima Rd., Scottsdale. This bike-run event is perfect for those wannabe triathletes who want to get into multisport competitions, but are still worried about the swim. If you want to burn off a few calories so you can indulge yourself at your Labor Day picnic, there are a couple 5K races you can jump into Saturday to burn off the burgers before you even eat them.
The Chances for Children Maricopa 5K & Kids Fun Run is Saturday, Sept. 5 at Pacana Park in Maricopa. The 5K starts at 7 a.m. and the fun run follows at 8 a.m.
Both courses stay within the perimeter of Pacana Park. Race day registration must be in by no later than 6:15 a.m. T-shirts are included with the $20 5K entry fee.

If you want to hit the golf course but don’t have any clubs, the Scottsdale Running Company’s XC Festival 5K is for you. The two-loop, 5,000 meter course will be run on grass and some hard-packed dirt across Silverado Golf course Saturday, Sept. 5 at 6 a.m. After the race, stick around to watch some of the best high school runners from around the state as they begin the 2009 season in one of Arizona’s premier cross country meets.

During the month of July, Sumits Yoga is offering free classes to new students. Classes are held in a heated studio, designed to warm students’ muscles and allow deeper, safer practice. Sumits Yoga has three Valley locations: 14676 N. Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd., Scottsdale; 7349 N. Via Paseo Del Sur, Suite 535, Scottsdale; and 20329 N. 59th Ave., Glendale.

If you want to start your Sunday right, there is a free yoga class tomorrow (Sunday, June 21,) at 9 a.m. at Chaparral Park & Community Center, 5401 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale.
The class is held in Chaparral Park next to the lake and behind the playground (when coming from the parking lot). The place is easy to find. Bring a mat and any props you might feel you need (blankets, yoga blocks and straps).
The class is open for all levels of yoga.
