Some people say they have the eye of the tiger. But how about the arms of a dragon?
According to Alicia “Al” Chandler, a member of the Arizona Dragon Boat Association who paddles for the Arizona Sun Warriors, anyone can become the arms of a dragon.
“Dragon boating is ideal for anyone who enjoys water sports, die-hard athletes, or those who are looking for some way to start being active,” Chandler said. “Dragon boating is a spectacular way to get your core muscles in shape.”
So what the heck is dragon boating?
“The boats our organization uses are 20-person boats,” Chandler explained, “which means each boat can hold a drummer on the front, followed by nine rows with two people in each row and a steer person at the rear. Each person paddles on the side of the boat they are seated on. We typically compete in 250-, 500- and 1,000-meter races.”
The sport gets its name because during festivals and races, teams race with a dragon head and tail attached to the boat.
“We have members in their teens and people who are in their 50s, as well as men and women of various fitness levels and athletic ability,” said Chandler, whose team works out twice a week on Tempe Town Lake. “There are several couples who paddle together in the organization. Our team emphasizes teamwork, positive attitude and camaraderie in the boat. We want to have fun.”
But not only do they have fun, they get fit, too.
“The technique involved in the stroke really works your core muscles, but it requires the use of your arms and legs as well,” Chandler said. “The more you work on your form and endurance, the more strenuous a paddling workout will be. If you need to take it easy, you can paddle a little lighter and take it easier.”
Sound like fun? Chandler said aspiring paddlers can come to the Tempe Town Lake Marina Tuesdays from 5:45 p.m.-8 p.m. or Sundays from 6:45 a.m.-9 a.m. and try it out for free.
